The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a Fresh Divinity, Declaring it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The speculation surrounding The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is creating a brand-new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer featuring intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio clarified that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This choice of words suggests that the team is likely designing a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it kicked off the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, player agency, and complex character building—elements that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths you can achieve if you're playing as a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also notoriously open-ended, enabling players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be solved in multiple ways, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you heeded something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can get ready for a new entry in this legendary franchise.
