Tetris Couldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

As any prominent honors show draws close, there’s always a demand for the addition of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything during that awards season
  • A different innovative game missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
  • Just some puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're small games, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
