A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major government projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The president confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the previous year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in public works. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled persistent questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an urgent pause in the building and running of all similar projects.
This halt was proposed pending a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the situation "requires immediate answers."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in full compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these strategic initiatives.
