The US Justice Department have officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the state's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This legal action, submitted to federal court, targets the redistricting plan championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on voting rights and undermines the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in violation of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the most significant response by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to gain just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will influence the remaining period of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or face resistance, congressional probes and potential additional obstacles.
