Cancellieri Displays Glimpses of Brilliance in Positive Aspect for Unstable Lazio

The feeling at their home stadium was decidedly gloomy this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had let in 10 goals while scoring only two in their previous five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in a long-running conflict with club owner Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Coming Unstitched?

Was the team's progress falling apart, or did there exist a thread maintaining its structure from the beginning? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as manager this summer, but then he admitted that the management had omitted to inform him about a registration embargo they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Reports that his departure was imminent were not true, but he stated that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Roman club appeared equally disorganized in their performances as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in their other initial five matches, which included the capital clash. At any given moment, it's been difficult to ascertain if they are improving or collapsing.

Cancellieri's Unforeseen Presence

At least one man kept smiling throughout. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio this year. He was on the previous campaign at Parma as a loanee and, during the summer break, his parent club were advocating for him to stay there a while longer. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team with no new signings.

Cancellieri arrived in the first place when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those as a substitute. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential but then not selecting him."

Finding His True Position

It's possible the coach was persistently working to determine the specific characteristics of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as an attacking winger when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile at No 9. Across 63 games while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
